Holland Road Church History
In the summer of 1996 Reverend Bruce A. Oliver of Grand Prairie, Texas, his lovely wife Winnie and son Dan believed God had called them to start a new Evangelical Methodist Church in the Arlington Texas area. After much prayer Reverend Oliver felt God’s leading to approach Mid-States District Superintendent (Rev. J. Vernon Conner of Fort Worth, Texas) with his vision for Arlington. Soon after a meeting was set up between the Superintendent, Board Chairman of Church Evangelism for the Mid-States District (Rev. Jon Edgell of Copperas Cove, Texas) and Reverend Oliver to discuss the start of a new church plant.
A new church proposal was submitted on August 6th, 1996, to the Mid-States District for their review. The proposal indicated a desire to plant a new church South of Highway 20. It was accepted and new plans began to spring up.
The District sent Reverend Oliver to Crested Butte, Colorado, on September 22-26, 1996 to Boot Camp for church leaders interested in starting new churches. Reverend Oliver was personally challenged to examine his heart for God’s calling. He came back more challenged and determined that this was the project that God was calling him to be involved with.
The first location of the church was at Arlington Oaks Office Complex in Arlington, Texas. This was located in East Arlington. The first service was on November 24th, 1996. The church began as a mission church of the Evangelical Methodist Church. It received financial support from the district. Grace EMC in Haltom City, Texas was very helpful in providing many needed items to help the church get its start.
After a meeting with the district’s Evangelism Board in October 1997, it was determined that the church should function as a fellowship church. This gave the local congregation the opportunity to begin bringing in members and adopt a local church board.
The church moved to West Arlington on Highway 303 in April of 1998. DFW Community Church had its first service at the new location on April 19th.
On April 24th 1998, at the Mid-States District Conference in Odessa, Texas, the DFW Community Church signed a historical Affiliation Resolution Document. This established the intent of DFW Community Church to become an official Evangelical Methodist Church in the Mid-States District. By unanimous vote, it was accepted that the DFW Community Church be granted the Affiliation.
Present for this event were General Superintendent Dr. Jack Wease, District Superintendent J. Vernon Conner, pastors, delegates and friends of the Mid-States District. Representing DFW Community Church were church secretary Mr. Bobby Wallace of North Richland Hills, Mr. Eric Jackson of Arlington, Rev. Mark Guyer of Irving, Winnie Oliver (Pastor Oliver’s wife), and Pastor Bruce A. Oliver of Grand Prairie.
After visiting the dedication service of one of our sister churches (Church of the Good Shepherd) in Grove OK. in the fall of 2003, Pastor Oliver believed God was speaking to him about moving out in faith. So Pastor Oliver began to trust God for the purchase of land to become our new permanent church home. After looking for months and having doors closed, God blessed. A beautiful lot of land was located in Mansfield Texas just minutes from Arlington and South of Hwy I-20. The land was purchased in May of 2004. The address is 650 North Holland Road just East of Hwy 360 at the intersection of Broad Street and Hwy 360. With the purchase of the land, the pastor and church leaders decided it was God’s leading to change the name of the church to Holland Road Church.
The congregation is currently meeting at The Montessori School 1770 Country Club Dr. in Mansfield, Texas. The congregation has been eager to relocate and trust God for it’s future. There has been a building fund established to help us raise money to get phase one of the building.
Holland Road Church celebrates its anniversary the first Sunday in December.
